Throwback: Legion of Doom takes down Penguins in Game 3 of 1997 Playoffs

Pittsburgh: As we know the rivalry between the Flyers & Penguins, the games have been physical and must-watch TV.

In today’s throwback, we go to April 21, 1997, as the Philadelphia Flyers took on the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 3 of the first round of playoffs from Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. This game featured the Flyer’s dominant line called “Legion of Doom” which was Eric Lindros, John LeClair & Mikael Renberg and the Penguins featured the two faces of the team which was Mario Lemieux & Jaromir Jagr.

Garth Snow got the start in goal for the Flyers going against Penguins Ken Wregget.

The Penguins came out and jumped on the Flyers and took a 2-1 lead at end of the first period on 2 goals from Jaromir Jagr, the Flyers got on the board by Mikael Renberg.

The Story of this game happened in the second period as it was dominated by the Flyers as they put up a 3 goal period with two of the three goals were done by the Legion of Doom of Eric Lindros & John LeClair. The Flyers other goal in that period was by Pat Falloon.

Dainius Zubrus iced the game for the Flyers with an empty-net goal as the Flyers took down the Penguins 5-3 and would take a 3-0 lead in the series.

The Flyers would go on to win the Series in 5 games & this would turn out to be the final season for Penguins Mario Lemieux while the Flyers went on to make the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals and fall to the Redwings in 4 games.
