Notre Dame takes down Penn State in Big Ten Men’s Hockey Championship

Notre Dame, IN: The two best teams in the Big Ten conference would go toe to toe on Saturday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena on the campus of Notre Dame University as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish took on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament. Notre Dame made the final by beating Minnesota while the Nittany Lions head to battle with the Fighting Irish after taking down the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Notre Dame are the defending conference champions, Penn State won the Big Ten in 2017 so this was a battle of the last two conference champions.

In the first period, both Penn State & Notre Dame would have some good scoring chances but the goalies were up to the test.

The Irish would get the scoring started by Spencer Stastney as he would backhand a shot past Penn State Goalie Peyton Jones for the early 1-0 lead

The Nittany Lions would answer right back as Sam Sternschein would put one past Notre Dame goalie Cale Morris to tie the game at 1

With under 4 minutes left in the first period, the Irish would strike to take a 2-1 lead on a goal from Cal Burke

The Nittany Lions would Strike fast and ties things up at 2 on the goal from Alec Marsh

The game would be tied at 2 at the end of the first period.

In the second period, both Nittany Lions & Fighting Irish would have their chances to score but the goalies would make some big saves.

Late in the second period, Notre Dame would break the 2-2 tie on a shot from Cam Morrison which gave the Irish a 3-2 lead.

In the 3rd period, the Nittany Lions would put the pressure on Notre Dame goalie Cale Morris but it would not be enough as the Irish would hold on for the 3-2 win and win Back to Back Big Ten Championships
